Dump Cake

Okay, so it is not a very delicious name. But what is in a name? A  cake by any other name would taste as sweet….never-mind.

This old copy has been around the block a bit. (maybe 20 years?)

This is easy, quick, takes 5 minutes to make and 1 hour to bake.

You need:

  • 1 can cherry pie filling
  • 1 can crushed pineapple, drained a little
  • 1 box white or yellow cake mix
  • chopped nuts of your choice
  • cinnamon and nutmeg, a few sprinkles
  • 1 1/2 cubes butter

Take a 9 x 13 cake pan.

Dump the cherry pie filling in the bottom and spread around.

Dump the pineapple over that and spread around.

Dump the box of cake mix  over that and spread around. This is just the cake mix, you do not add anything to it. It is still in powder form.

Sprinkle over the chopped nuts and spices.

Now, dice the butter into little cubes and drop over the cake evenly.

I sometimes use just 1 cube, to save on the fatness factor. But I realize 1) sometimes the cake ends up with dry pockets and 2) the whole cake is sugar and fat. It is what it is, just use the whole amount. You are not eating the whole thing yourself. It is a potluck or party kind of a dish to serve to many. No sense being squeamish over a little more butter. Its like buying 3 donuts for yourself and then getting a diet coke or low fat milk. Why bother now?

Anyway, where was I. Oh yeah, put this in the oven for 1 hour. Juices will bubble up, butter will melt and it will become a rich, sweet and most popular dessert ever.

Oh, and it has been around for years, so for many of you this may be old hat. But for the rest…

enjoy!
